Can I Use a TV Wall Mount for My Computer Monitor

If you’re looking to mount your computer monitor on the wall to free up desk space, you may be wondering if you can use a TV wall mount instead of a more expensive monitor-specific mount. The short answer is yes; you can use a TV wall mount for your computer monitor if you match the mounting hole pattern and weight capacity. Here are some tips on choosing the correct TV wall mount for your monitor and what to consider during setup.

Choosing the Right TV Wall Mount

When selecting a TV wall mount for your computer monitor, the most important considerations are the mounting hole pattern, weight capacity, and depth.

Mounting Hole Pattern

Monitor mounting holes are measured in millimetres and standardized based on the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) system. Common patterns include 75x75mm, 100x100mm, and 200x200mm. You’ll need to match the mounting holes on the back of your monitor to the compatible pattern on the TV mount. Most mounts support multiple VESA patterns but double-check before purchasing.

Weight Capacity

Check the weight of your monitor without the stand. The TV wall mount needs to be rated to safely hold that weight. Most monitors weigh between 2-10 Kgs. A sturdy mount rated for 10-15 Kgs should accommodate most standard monitors.

Depth

Consider how far out from the wall you want your monitor positioned. Articulating mounts with arms allow further adjustment, while low-profile mounts hug the wall. Make sure to account for clearance if you have a wall-mounted keyboard tray or other peripherals below the monitor.

Installation Tips

Once you’ve selected the correct TV wall mount for your monitor, here are some tips for proper installation:

  • Carefully check that your mount lines up with the holes on the back of your monitor. Refer to the VESA measurement.
  • Securely fasten the mounting plate onto the monitor using the provided screws. Don’t over-tighten.
  • Drill pilot holes for the mount into wall studs whenever possible, and use the proper anchors for your wall type (drywall, concrete, etc.).
  • Tighten the mount into the wall securely. Use a level to ensure it is straight.
  • Attach the monitor to the mounted plate and lock it in place. Check that the monitor can tilt/swivel if desired.
  • Organise and clip in cables to keep them tidy. Consider running cables through the wall.
  • Adjust height and angle as needed. The monitor should feel stable and secure when installation is complete.

Using Your Monitor

Once installed, a monitor on a TV wall mount should function just like it does on a desk or tabletop stand. However, there are a few differences to keep in mind:

  • A wall-mounted monitor is not adjustable in height or position without an articulating mount. Plan viewing position carefully.
  • You will not have accessible ports on the bottom or sides of the monitor. Place ports you need access to on the top or back.
  • Monitor speakers will sound different when directed at the wall versus angled forward. External speakers may be preferable.
  • Consider cables for wall-mounted peripherals like webcams if needed. An extended HDMI cable can allow device flexibility.

With the correct mount and proper installation, a wall-mounted monitor can deliver a clean and modern workspace setup. Just ensure you get the mounting specifics right for your monitor model and setup needs.
