Can All TVs Be Mounted On The Wall?

With TVs getting thinner and lighter, more people are interested in mounting them on the wall. Wall mounting frees up space and creates a sleek, modern look in your living room or home theatre. However, not all TVs are designed to be wall-mounted. There are several factors to consider when determining if your TV can go on the wall.

TV Size and Weight

The size and weight of your TV are the most critical factors in deciding if it can be wall-mounted. Most TV wall mounts have a weight limit and are designed for specific TV sizes. Check the specs on your wall mount and TV to make sure your TV doesn’t exceed the weight capacity. Keep in mind that larger TVs tend to be heavier. A 75″ TV likely won’t work with a mount rated for TVs under 20 KGs. Measure your TV screen diagonally to find the size, and then check the specs to get the weight.

TV Hole Pattern

Televisions have holes in the back panel where the wall mount attaches. However, there is no universal mount or hole pattern for all TVs. The holes on the back of your TV must line up precisely with the holes on your wall mount. Check that the mounting hole pattern on your TV is compatible with the mount you want to use before purchasing. Many mount manufacturers list which TV brands and models their mounts are compatible with.

Flat Back Panel

Your TV should have a flat back panel for a secure wall mount installation. Some curved or irregularly shaped TVs are not ideal for wall mounting, as the mount will not make flush contact with the TV. TVs with a flat, square-shaped back panel have the best surface for safely mounting to the wall.

Mounting Points

Does your TV have mounting points, brackets, or inset holes on the back panel? These allow you to attach a wall mount bracket securely. TVs with mounting points or only one central mount point could be problematic or impossible to mount. Any TV you want to mount should have at least four rear mounting points to properly distribute the weight and attach to a wall plate or brackets.

VESA Compatibility

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) has developed a standard screw pattern for TV wall mounts. Most flat panel TVs are VESA compatible, meaning they have four threaded holes in a universal pattern on the back to accommodate VESA wall mounts. Check that your TV has VESA compatibility if you want to use something other than the manufacturer’s proprietary mount.

TV Inputs Facing Out

Before mounting your TV, consider the direction you want it to hang on the wall. Does your TV have rear-facing inputs and ports? If so, wall mounting may make them inaccessible. Ensure your connections face out or down if you need access to them after the TV is mounted. A tilting or articulated mount can allow you to pull the TV away from the wall if required.

Hire a Professional

If you have any concerns about your wall’s weight capacity or ability to install your TV’s mount safely, don’t hesitate to call in a pro. TV mounting requires studs or solid masonry, specialised tools, and an understanding of load ratings and hardware. Improperly mounted TVs can fall, causing severe injury or damage. Leaving the TV wall mount installation to professionals gives peace of mind.

Most flat-screen TVs can be mounted securely on your wall with the correct mount and some preparation. Follow the manufacturer’s specifications, enlist help, and double-check your TV’s measurements and mounting points. Done correctly, a wall-mounted TV can provide a clean, contemporary look for your home. Just take precautions – no one wants to see an expensive TV crashing down.
